Making An Eco-Friendly Splash

Until my daughter was about six months old, I never helped with bath time. I loftily informed my husband that I was giving him a gift by letting him be in charge of baths. After all, I was nursing her and getting up with her every night and staying home with her every day, so I had endless opportunities to bond with her. This was his opportunity to have some quality father-daughter bonding time.
While I really did believe this was a great opportunity for them to forge a special bond with a regular nightly routine, the truth is I was terrified to have anything to do with bath time. My daughter was so tiny and delicate: she was born small, and didn’t hit the ten pound mark until she was nearly six months old. I was just so afraid she would slip out of my grasp. I would hover anxiously just out of sight, listening for a telltale splash that indicated she had wiggled out of his grip. I know people have been bathing babies for centuries, and as long as they’re responsible everything is usually fine. But moms fret over the weirdest things.
Now my daughter is ten months old. She’s been confident at sitting up for months, and she’s even able to walk a little. I’m still a little afraid to bathe her alone but she’s eating solid foods now, and if I don’t want her to be a sticky mess all day it’s kind of a necessity. Plus, she really loves baths, so I put my fears aside so she can have a little splashing around time on especially sticky days. I’ve even begun stocking up on educational toys for her, like an endangered species bubble bath set that will keep her entertained even as she gets clean.
I think my husband kind of misses getting to have a little special daddy-daughter time every evening while I get a little time for myself. That’s why this weekend I’m going to explain to him that it’s really important that the two of them bond by leaving the house together and doing something productive. I’m sure they’ll have a really nice time at the grocery store while mommy takes a nap. It will just be another cherished memory. Yep, that’s totally it.
