Baby-Proof Your House With Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

When my daughter took her first steps a few weeks ago, all of my wise parental friends warned me that I’d never get any rest again. I figured they were exaggerating. After all, she was still so wobbly. Surely I had some time before she built up speed. Boy was I wrong. Within days of her first steps, she was running through the house. It still looks so bizarre to me. She is ten months old and small for her age – she’s still just a baby! She shouldn’t be able to move like that. When I said this to my sister she said, “Oh sweetie, she’s not a baby anymore. She can walk now: this means she’s a toddler.”

When she said this, my heart sank a little. I had done some rudimentary baby-proofing, but toddlers require a whole other set of precautions. They can reach things you wouldn’t believe, and they’re adept at getting into tiny spaces that you don’t even realize are filthy until they emerge, covered in grime.

I’m pretty laid back about my daughter getting a little exposure to dirt and germs – I think it actually helps her build up a stronger immune system in the long run. But I still keep bottles of eco-friendly kid-safe antibacterial cleansers around the house for when she decides to fish around under the dishwasher for food detritus or get herself lodged behind the toilet. When I see her making a break for an area that crosses that border between messy and dirty, I give it a quick spritz and wipe it down with a washable micro fiber cloth that reduces paper towel waste.

Eco-friendly cleaning products are win-win; they are safe for the earth, and safe for your kids. My husband and I are quickly learning that it’s impossible to keep up with a determined toddler – just last night I heard her thundering footsteps as she charged all the way from the living room to the bathroom where I was enjoying a relaxing hot bath before my husband could even get off the couch. But even if we can’t be with her for every step she takes, we can at least make sure the floors she’s running over are clean.
