Much to the surprise and dismay of my husband and myself, we have an outdoorsy baby. More specifically, we have a baby who loves the water. My husband is a fair-skinned redhead whose complexion demands that he avoid the sun. I don’t mind being outside, but I have a crippling fear of sharks that keeps me firmly on dry land. I don’t even like to visit aquariums that feature sharks just in case they escape. Hey, I never claimed to be rational.

But my daughter loves the water. She can splash in the pool all afternoon without getting bored. She’s ridden in my lap down kid-friendly water slides and demanded to go again before we even reached the bottom. She’d hang out in the bathtub for hours if we let her. It’s only a matter of time before she’s old enough to hear about the beach, and then I will have no choice but to end my lifelong boycott of oceans so that I can accompany her into the water. I mean, I guess I could have my husband do it, but he’s so pale he might burst into flames, and then who would protect her from the sharks?
