Positive Thinking For Sleepless Moms

Posted by on Monday, October 15th, 2012

Yesterday my beautiful, funny, spunky daughter turned one. The past year has somehow simultaneously been the fastest and slowest of my life. I have had to fight the tedium and isolation that people don’t warn new moms about, which was especially exacerbated by me switching from being a workaholic to a stay-at-home mom with little time to prepare for such a radical life change. But I have also gotten to experience the profound joys of watching my daughter evolve from a tiny, helpless, delicate newborn, to a sturdy, fearless toddler. It’s pretty amazing. You know what else would be amazing? If I could just get some sleep.

People promised me that once my daughter turned one, she would potentially start sleeping through the night. Granted, I probably shouldn’t have expected that switch to happen immediately upon the occasion of her birthday. But at the very least, I hoped that the excitement of a party and presents would have worn her out enough to sleep through the night. Not so; I was up with her four times last night. To soothe my disappointment over this turn of events, I am reminding myself of some important facts:

I’m Not Alone

Even wealthy, high-powered celebrities who can afford high-end plush mattresses don’t always get a good night’s sleep. Some celebrity moms are also experiencing sleepless nights (though they at least suffer on a more comfortable mattress than mine).

I Can Nap

Before I had my daughter, I worked sixty-plus hours a week managing a high-volume retail store. The only thing consistent about my schedule was its inconsistency. Some days I had to be to work at 6am; some days I could go in at noon, but then I would usually stay until after midnight. Now I work from home. In the morning, I take a shower and put on my “work clothes” (a different set of pajamas than the one I slept in). Most days I work while my daughter naps. But if I’m tired, no one’s going to begrudge me sleeping on the job. It’s the benefit of being your own boss.

I Have A Cozy Nest

Maybe my mattress isn’t the most expensive in the world, but my bedding is nothing to scoff at.  If I’m going to be up four times a night doing night feedings and soothing a cranky toddler, at least I’m surrounded by luxurious softness. When I’m wrapped up in my organic bamboo sheets, with my head gently bolstered by a rejuvenating buckwheat pillow, it’s a little easier to enjoy being awake.
